Laura Gigliotti has been styling hair since she was a kid. First, it was her dolls’ hair and then her brother’s. With her love of art and color, she attended an all-women’s art school and studied graphic design, and upon graduating, she worked in graphic design. However, it wasn’t until her mom was diagnosed with cancer that Laura rediscovered her true calling. She started caring for her mom and was fired from her design gig. Laura could have seen her job loss as a terrible event, but as a devout Christian, she realized it was a divine redirection to her true north.

Following One's Heart and One's Faith
Since Laura knew deep down that she wanted to work with hair, she went to a beauty school using her pension savings. Focusing on her new goal helped her through the difficulty of watching her mom pass away. The vision of herself as a hairstylist kept her grounded and connected with others through this challenging time. Following a divorce and her mom’s death, Laura moved to West Palm, Florida, managing an apartment building and working in a salon. Following a life long dream to live in Colorado, she moved, with no connections but a clear idea of what she wanted for herself.
She developed her foundational skill set working in many different salon environments, sometimes having to work at other jobs as she built out her business.. In 2015, she joined the team of Beauty Bar in Colorado Springs and was inspired by the owner’s entrepreneurial spirit. It was time to follow her faith with action.
The Creation of Shear Underground
Post Covid-19 led Laura to regroup and redirect her vision of what life looks like. As she watched the industry change so rapidly post-pandemic, she was gifted with a vision. It was 2020, post-pandemic, and Laura built a down-to-earth therapy session environment in her raw, rock/cement basement. It is a “safe space” where her clients can freely be themselves and speak their minds while discussing beauty and having their hair styled by a hair extension expert. Laura describes her basement studio as “like an underground rave; you can only get there if you know someone and get a secret card.”
With Shear Underground, Laura focuses on what she loves best—she specializes in color (inspired by the beauty of the outdoors), hair loss (touched by those struggling and wanting to help them feel beautiful), and extensions. Her hair extension installations are “an experience, like a dance.”
As she learned more about the mechanics of sewn-in hair extension installations, she realized the challenges she and her fellow hair artists faced. How can you produce quality work quickly and efficiently, engaged in a highly technical process with many moving parts, while exuding professionalism in front of your clients? She quickly realized the answer: organization! Following this epiphany, she contacted her ex-husband, who is the owner of a sheet metal fabrication business. She asked if he could help her design an efficient organizer for professional hair extension tools.
