LauraLee has been styling hair since she was a kid—first her dolls’ hair, then her brother’s. Drawn to art and color, she attended an all-women’s art school to study graphic design and started her career bringing creative projects to life.
When her mom was diagnosed with cancer, everything changed overnight. LauraLee lost her design job and had to figure out how to keep going while caring for the person who mattered most. In that moment of uncertainty, she turned to her first passion—hair—and earned her cosmetology license so she could have a flexible schedule.
What began as a way to make ends meet quickly became something deeper. As a woman of faith, she came to see that season not as a setback but as a divine redirection guiding her back to her true north. Hair gave her purpose again, a way to connect with people and create beauty even in difficult times. Since LauraLee knew deep down she wanted to work with hair, she enrolled in beauty school using her pension savings. Committing to this new path gave her strength as she faced the heartbreak of losing her mom. The vision of becoming a hairstylist kept her grounded and gave her a way to connect with others during a season of loss and transition.
After her mom’s passing and the end of her marriage, LauraLee moved to West Palm Beach, Florida, managing an apartment building while working in a salon to keep her dream alive. Eventually, she felt called to follow her lifelong vision of living in Colorado. She packed up everything and moved across the country with no connections—just faith and a clear idea of what she wanted her life to look like.
She built her skills working in a wide range of salon environments, often taking on extra jobs to keep moving forward. In 2015, she joined the team at Beauty Bar in Colorado Springs, inspired by the owner’s entrepreneurial spirit and the possibilities ahead. It was time to follow her faith with action: “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” (Psalm 119:105)

Post-COVID-19, LauraLee felt a deep need to regroup and reimagine what her life and career could look like. As she watched the beauty industry shift almost overnight, she was struck by a clear vision: to create something more meaningful than just another salon. In 2020, she transformed the raw, rock-and-cement basement of her home into Shear Underground—a down-to-earth, almost secret studio where clients could feel safe to be themselves. As LauraLee likes to say, “It’s like an underground rave; you can only get there if you know someone and get a secret card.”
With Shear Underground, she focused on what she loves most—creating custom color inspired by the beauty of the outdoors, helping clients with hair loss rediscover their confidence, and designing hair extension experiences that feel like a dance. But she also saw firsthand the challenges stylists face with extensions: the pressure to deliver precise, beautiful work quickly and professionally, all while managing tools and supplies in a high-stakes environment.

Fueled by determination and her creative spirit, LauraLee reached out to her ex-husband, who owns a sheet metal fabrication business.
